Our Personal Hole in the Ground!

August 31, 2007

Wow!  Two days of work, and the basement is dug, the footings poured, and blocks, sand, and concrete are ready to unite under the skilled hands of construction workers to form our basement.

And here are the blocks that will form the walls of our basement.

Oh, and I have an increasingly nasty case of poison oak from clearing trees last weekend.  Bummer.

Breaking Ground Tuesday!!

August 24, 2007

Photo_2
Well, we signed the papers on Thursday, and we are breaking ground on our new home this Tuesday!  Wow!!  It’s hard to believe!  We should be in the home by the end of January.

Our property is a beautiful, heavily-wooded 2 1/2 acres.  We are going to keep as many of the trees as we can.  You will hardly even be able to see our house from the road!

I said it before, and I’ll say it again.  GOD IS GOOD!

Rick Warren Podcast

August 23, 2007

I am a big fan of Rick Warren. I appreciate his simplicity and how he thinks outside of the box. Recently, he began producing a podcast and blog for pastors to deal with the unique issues we face. It has been a great resource for me.

Well, recently someone from his organization asked me to share my thoughts regarding the podcast. My comments, along with those of several other pastors, were included in an article on Brother Warren’s website, Pastors.com. You can read the article here.

Thanks, Kevin (the Newbie Pastor) for the heads up that the article was online!

So It Begins…

August 21, 2007

Well, after months of examining plans, wondering about budgets, seeking God, and dreaming, we have finally settled on a house plan, and we sign the contract with our builder this Thursday.  We are so excited!  In just a few weeks, we will break ground on our new home, and we should be able to move in by either December or January!

All I can say is, GOD IS GOOD!!

Just last night I was reading In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, where Mark Batterson wrote that stepping out in faith always involves a certain measure of uncertainty.  In fact, it was either him or the fellow who wrote Good to Great who said that the best we can hope for in most cases is to be about 80% sure.  We must learn to live that that 20% uncertainty.

Well, that’s about right.  I’m at about 80% right now.  There are still some unanswered questions, specifically in regards to finances and selling our mobile home where we now live.  Nonetheless, Kim and I both have a sense of peace that the Lord is leading us to make this move right now, and that He will take care of all the details for us.

Isn’t it great to be a King’s Kid?

Please keep us in prayer over the next few months.  I’ll post pictures to show you the progress once we get started.

It’s stinkin’ hot here, y’all!

IT’S SOOOOO HOT…

…..the birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
…..the trees are whistling for the dogs.
…..the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
…..hot water now comes out of both taps.
…..you can make sun tea instantly.
…..you learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
…..the temperature drops below 95 F (35 C) and you feel a little chilly.
…..you discover that in August it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.
…..you discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.
…..you actually burn your hand opening the car door.
…..you break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m.
…..your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?"
…..you realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
…..the potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter.
…..the cows are giving evaporated milk.
…..farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.

Thanks to Sherri Travis for sharing this reflection upon Alabama meteorology!

Saturday Evening Reflections

August 11, 2007

Wow, it has been a while since I’ve posted anything.  I’m glad to know that it has been noticed, though.  I’ve had several people ask me why I haven’t been posting.  Some of these were folks that I didn’t even know were reading my blog!  So, cool.  Thanks for reading!  Please feel free to leave comments.  I’d love to get some discussion going.

Anyway, it’s Saturday evening, and we just returned from a trip to Florence, Alabama to visit family and host a birthday pool party for our two daughters (their birthdays are a month apart, so we threw one party halfway between the two for our families).  Since I haven’t posted in a while, I’ll toss out various thoughts to catch up.  Some guys call this a mind dump…  Personally I like to think of it as an "extemporaneous reflection upon recent random contemplations."  Somehow, that just sounds more elegant than a mind dump.  So, here goes…

  • The pool party was a blast.  It was the first time my two year old has been in a pool, and watching her experience a kiddie pool slide for the first time was the most fun I have had in months.
  • I can’t believe my older daughter is ten. Double-digits!  Just six more years until driving and dating.  I’d better work on my intimidating stare before the boys come calling.
  • I have the opportunity to attend the Outreach convention in November in San Diego, California!  I’ve been selected along with two other graduates of Indiana Wesleyan University’s Masters program to represent the University at the conference.  I’m very humbled and honored to be selected, and I’m seriously pumped about getting to go back to Cali and hang out with Dr. Bob Whitesel again.  Not only that, but several of my heroes in the faith will be there, and I’m looking forward to hopefully meeting some of them in person.
  • I read today that my denomination, the Assemblies of God, has a new General Superintendent.  Dr. George O. Wood was elected this week at our General Council in Indianapolis.  I attended a minister’s retreat a few years ago where he ministered, and I found Dr. Wood to be a humble, thoughtful, and godly man.  The Lord genuinely refreshed my wife and me through his ministry.  I am grateful that he has been elected, and I extend my congratulations to him.
  • Living in the South, I have from time to time succumbed to the temptation of using poor grammar.  Having worked in broadcasting, I am very sensitive to poor communication skills and lazy enunciation.  Nonetheless, I sometimes find the words comin’ out my mouth soundin’ like sumpthin’ strate frum a Jeff Foxworthy video.  I can usually git….  excuse me…  "get" away with it, because we Southerners have a way of understanding one another that folks from other parts of the country just don’t seem to have.  ("You ain’t from around here, are ya?")  But if I am going to Cali again, and if we’re going to start podcasting our church services, then I need to work on my speech.
  • Another thing that I need to work on…. and I’ve needed to do this for a while…  I need to lose about twenty or thirty pounds.  So, since the Cali trip is coming up in a few months, that seems like a good date to mark as a goal.  I want to lose twenty pounds by the first week of November.  Now, y’all hold me to that, ya hear?
  • One more thing, I’m looking forward to church tomorrow.  I love our church family.  I love worshiping with them.  I’m excited to see what the Lord will do next!!

There.  My mind is dumped, my reflections complete.  I apologize for neglecting the blog over the last few weeks.  I’ll try to do better from now on!

Peace!
